Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide baseline data regarding working conditions, such as daily working hours and regular days off, to improve the welfare of optometrists.
Methods: The survey was conducted with 533 members (379 males and 154 females) of the Busan Optometric Association during a continuing education session in April 2012. The questionnaire consisted of a total of 30 items: 10 items for general characteristics and 20 items for welfare concerns.
Results: The main reasons for why optometrists leave or turnover from their workplace were because of long daily working hours (38%) and lack of regular day off (17%). More than half of the respondents (56%) reported high to very high work-related stress level. Although the most important values in the workplace for the members was regular days off (36%) and reduced daily working hours (34%), only 33% of the optical shops provided regular days off. Furthermore, 72% of members working more than 11 hours a day; 95% of respondents desired to work between 8 to 10 hours a day. The majority of respondents (91.8%) were in favor of regular days off, would actively participate in such a program.
Conclusions: Poor working conditions that include long daily working hours and lack of regular days off might make work life unstable and stressful. There are concerns that we should make an effort to improve welfare of optometrists.
